The Downside of SEO
I haven’t allow automatic publishing of comments on the site for quite a while because even with a captcha I was still getting loads of spam comments. The reason behind this is search engine optimization (SEO). In order to raise your rank on search sites, such as Google, you need to get some authority and one way of doing that is having other sites to link to you. Hence armies of people at outsourced SEO companies posting fatuous comments. But Google isn’t that stupid so if there are lots of comments the same it discounts them.
Now I am getting comments where they have clearly been set up to get round this problem by providing those entering the comments with some standard text and some parameters that can be changed. You can see some examples below.
But these are just being posted verbatim without any changes which somewhat defeats the object!
Of course if the comments don’t get published they are worthless anyway and I assume that the SEO companies are working on the fact that if you post enough comments some will get through. But not here!
